Tok Sen: Ancient Thai Healing Therapy
Tok Sen is an ancient healing technique originating from the Lanna region of Northern Thailand, with a history dating back over 5,000 years. Rooted in traditional Thai medicine, the name Tok Sen translates to “clearing blocked energy,” reflecting its purpose of promoting balance and restoring the body’s natural flow of energy. Unlike other massage techniques, Tok Sen utilizes a wooden mallet (koon) and wedge (lim) to create rhythmic tapping vibrations along the body’s energy pathways, known as the Sen Sib lines in Thai medicine. This distinctive method helps release deep-seated tension, relax muscles, and improve overall well-being.
The core principle of Tok Sen is vibrational therapy. When the wooden tools are used to tap along the body’s meridian lines, they generate mechanical vibrations that penetrate deep into muscles, fascia, and tendons. This process stimulates circulation, encourages lymphatic drainage, and helps break down adhesions in soft tissues. The rhythmic tapping also works on the nervous system, promoting relaxation and reducing stress levels. By addressing energy blockages, Tok Sen enhances the body’s ability to heal itself naturally.
Tok Sen is more than just a physical therapy—it is a holistic practice that harmonizes body, mind, and spirit. The wooden mallet and wedge used in the therapy are traditionally made from tamarind or teak wood, often blessed by monks to enhance their spiritual healing properties. By integrating Tok Sen into modern therapeutic practices, practitioners can offer a unique and deeply restorative experience that connects clients to an ancient healing tradition. This course not only enhances a therapist’s manual skills but also introduces a unique modality that complements various massage techniques enabling them to provide effective treatments for pain relief, stress reduction, and musculoskeletal issues.

Pidjet Jalan is an ancient traditional massage that combines barefoot techniques with the use of a slendang (a long piece of cloth). This powerful and holistic method is gaining increasing popularity in the global massage community.
The roots of these Pidjet techniques are deeply embedded in my Moluccan heritage. Many of us with Indonesian ancestry were taught from a young age to perform Pidjet Jalan—walking and massaging on the backs, legs, and arms of our elders and parents—as an act of care and respect.
Traditionally performed on a futon or mat placed directly on the floor, Pidjet Jalan is a barefoot massage that involves walking, sliding, stretching, and rocking with the feet. This method is just as important and effective as using hands, knees, or elbows, and may or may not include oil.
Slendang refers to a long fabric, usually around 2 meters in length and 70 to 100 centimeters wide. It is made of cotton, woven, or silk material. Widely used by women throughout the world, it serves various functions—from carrying babies or small children, to transporting goods, and even as ceremonial attire in traditional rituals such as weddings, births, or funerals.
In this masterclass, Pidjet Jalan – Slendang, I will guide participants in incorporating the slendang as a valuable tool for enhancing traditional bodywork. You’ll learn how this simple cloth can offer additional comfort and support—both for the therapist and the client.
The techniques will be practiced fully clothed, without oil, on a futon or yoga mat. A full session typically lasts between 30 minutes to an hour.
Prepare to be surprised and inspired by the ancient healing benefits of Pidjet Jalan – Slendang. It helps preserve your hands and fingers, promotes relaxation and stability, and creates a deeply grounded experience for both therapist and client.

Benefits of Pidjet Jalan – Slendang
Pidjet Jalan – Slendang is more than just a traditional massage; it is a holistic healing practice that offers a wide range of physical, mental, and emotional benefits for both the therapist and the client. Rooted in Indonesian heritage, this technique integrates barefoot massage and the use of a slendang (a long cloth) to deliver deep, stable, and therapeutic bodywork.
Reduces Muscle Tension and Pain
The deep and controlled pressure applied by the feet helps release chronic muscle tension, knots, and stiffness. It is especially effective for large muscle groups such as the back, thighs, and calves.
Improves Blood and Lymphatic Circulation
The gliding and rocking motions enhance circulation, promoting oxygen flow to the tissues and helping the body eliminate toxins more efficiently.
Promotes Relaxation and Stress Relief
The slow, rhythmic movements, combined with the grounding nature of barefoot touch, create a calming effect on the nervous system. This helps reduce anxiety, mental fatigue, and emotional stress.
Enhances Therapist’s Comfort and Longevity
Using the slendang provides support and leverage, reducing strain on the therapist’s hands, wrists, and shoulders. This allows therapists to work longer and more comfortably without risking injury or fatigue.
Increases Flexibility and Mobility
The stretching and rocking motions encourage joint mobility and improve flexibility in muscles and connective tissues, making it especially helpful for those with stiffness or limited range of motion.
Creates a Deep Connection with Traditional Healing
Practicing Pidjet Jalan – Slendang connects both giver and receiver to ancient wisdom and cultural traditions. It brings a sense of grounding, respect, and mindfulness to the healing process.
Supports Energetic Balance
This technique naturally stimulates energy flow throughout the body (similar to meridian or chakra systems), promoting inner balance, vitality, and harmony
